RX-105 Xi Gundam "Selene"
Elliott Gray
Hello. Thank you for taking the time to look over my entry. This was the 1st place qualifying winner from the Spokane, WA Hobbytown GBWC contest. The staff members there told that there was a request for me to submit this entry online, so here it is!
The origin for this model was when saw the similar triangular silhouettes of the Eclipse Gundam and the Xi Gundam and thinking "maybe they could work well together if i combined them." When I started thinking of what the fictional reason would be for this, I settled on it being a specialized space-use adaptation of the Xi Gundam with added propulsion and mobility: A prototype named "Selene" for the greek goddess of the moon.
Since this was envisioned as a high-mobility, space-use mobile suit, I tried to incorporate both Xi, Eclipse, and Exia parts harmoniously across the entire model to create an aggressive and fast appearance. This involved removing a lot of the surface mold detail from the Eclipse parts that were very obviously from SEED and adding new details. The rounded sections of the Xi Gundam provide an interesting contrast with the overall sharp appearance, so I tried to include that "contrast" in other places as well. This involved carving a lot of sanding down surfaces from hard edges to round surfaces, like the wing binder parts from the Amazing Exia, then carving hexagon shapes.
The backpack is a combination of the Eclipse Raijin Striker & Amazing Exia, and has a lot of added panel separation through custom panel lines and carving. Since I mounted the wings of the Amazing Exia binders in a different way, I made vents out of pla plate to cover the gaps that were created.
The weapon combines both of the Eclipse beam sabers into a single lance. As I was making this model the image of a mounted dragoon with a long polearm started coming to mind, so I thought this was appropriate.
